Orthopaedics

Hello,
I’m Phebe Bloomingburg, MSN, RN.  I am the manager of the Orthopaedics unit located on 10 South of Vanderbilt University Hospital and 6 Round Wing of VUMC’s Medical Center North.

To work in the Orthopaedics unit, our nurses need to exhibit strong teamwork skills and be able to provide individualized treatment to patients in a very demanding acute care unit with a high patient turnover.

About Us:

Our unit specializes in caring for orthopaedic patients seeking treatment for ortho-spine, ortho-trauma, ortho-oncology, foot, ankle, hand, and shoulder surgeries.

Our patient focus is to provide excellent care to all our patients, meeting their needs and requests to the best of our abilities.

A typical shift for our nurses includes working with an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment with between 6 to 12 surgical admissions and discharges each day.  We use specialty equipment such as the continuous passive motion machine, wound vac, OrthoPAT, Hot Ice Machine, over-head frames, and slide (transfer) boards to care for our patient population.  Nursing staff receive education to use this equipment during orientation as well as on-going education on the unit

Working in Orthopaedics gives brand new nurses an excellent opportunity to begin their professional life.  Some find they have a true love of the orthopaedic population and make this their home.  Those who choose to explore other avenues of opportunities take with them skills that they can apply to all aspects of nursing, such as time management, pain management, and customer service.

We pride ourselves on our teamwork and our close working relationship with therapy services which is integral to our success in preparing patients to return to their homes or to move to the next level of care.
