On Friday, May 4, 2012 Vanderbilt University Medical Center celebrated Nurses' Week with our annual Nursing Awards & Recognition Event.  Congratulations to all our nominees!  Below are the recipients and their thoughts on what it meant to be recognized amongst an exceptional list of nominees.

Rosamond Gabrielson's Staff Nurse of the Year Award for Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt
Maria (Jane M) Sullivan, BSN, RN4-CC
Children's Hospital OR

"It is such an honor to be recognized by my colleagues!  I feel that every nurse at Vanderbilt is a great nurse and we all have something to give to our patients and teach to each other.  It was a great  honor to be nominated and I am truly grateful for the honor that my peers have bestowed on me with this award."

Rosamond Gabrielson's Staff Nurse of the Year Award for Vanderbilt Medical Group
Danett Guy, BSN, RN4
Pulmonary Care

"I was totally shocked and amazed that my colleagues have endorsed what I seemed to think is everyday normal work.  It is an honor to know that what I do makes a difference in others lives.  This award could not have been possible without working with the best and most knowledgeable group of people.  The award was given to one VMG nurse, but we are all nurses of the year."

Carol Terrell, RN3
Adult Program, VPH

"I am so honored and also humbled to be nominated by my peers.  To have then been selected is just over the top.  I work with such amazing people.  I am so proud to be a part of VPH.  I am so thankful for the vision of those in leadership and the commitment of those I work with to make this a place of excellence and caring for those struggling with mental illness."

Sondra Blount, BSN, RN4-CC
10 North Trauma

"I was absolutely elated to have been recognized by my colleagues!  It was such an honor just to have been nominated for it!  I couldn't believe I actually won it.  There are so many wonderful people that work here at Vanderbilt and do such exceptional jobs and I am so happy to be one of the players to such a great team!"

Rebecca Clark Culpepper Education and Mentorship Award
Jennifer Barut, MSN, RN
Nursing Professional Development Specialist, VPH

"Receiving this award is like the icing on the cake of having such a fantastic job.  I was surprised and honored!  I am blessed to work with such wonderful and talented people in two different departments (Nursing Education & VPH) who make my job enjoyable and fun and who elevate me and enable me to do work that I love.  I have the best bosses possible, and they have mentored and encouraged me to grow in ways that made this award possible."

Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year Award
Jill Kinch, MSN, RN, CPNP-AC
Nurse Practitioner, Children's Perioperative Services

"I am so proud to work at Children’s Hospital and am very fortunate to be supported by great nursing leaders who have invested in my growth and development.  I am so fortunate to be surrounded by the very best in nursing!  I sincerely appreciated being recognized and nominated for the Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year Award, and certainly never expected to be selected.  I was so surprised and humbled to receive the award.  This is both a personal and professional honor, as it is my life’s work to strive to provide excellence in nursing service for infants, children, and their families."

Licensed Practical Nurse of the Year Award
Janice Harvell, LPN 2
Neurology Clinic

"I was overwhelmed with joy and disbelief simultaneously when I saw my picture flash on the screen.  To think that my fellow nurses would think that I had the qualities for such an honor is more that I could have ever imagined.  I professed a hope in nursing at age 9 when I helped to care for a very good friend with Polio, every day after school.  To be a great nurse is my dream come true.  I am truly honored to be the LPN Nurse of the Year.  Thank you very much."

Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice Award
Elizabeth Card, RN IV
Research Nurse Specialist, Anesthesiology

"I am so very proud to work here at VUMC.  I think we have a fantastic hospital staffed with compassionate, intelligent, energetic nurses and physicians.  As a research nurse, I do not really have a “home base” patient care  unit.   I see patients in a variety of settings in VUH, TVC, OHO, VBJ and the Children’s Hospital.  I am consistently met with staff who are passionate about what they do; it is really an inspiration.  To be recognized by such a fantastic group of people means so very much.  I am so honored and thankful."

Educator of the Year Award
Michelle Browning, MSN, RN
Nurse Educator, 4 East OB/GYN

"To be honored with such an award was, well, no word comes to mind to express how I felt.  I was beside myself with happiness.  I was humbled because I know I didn't achieve this alone; it was my whole team, the exceptional staff I work for, the wonderful profession I belong to, that really won this award.  I'm just so happy and grateful that the award was given to me."

Team Award
MICU Condolence Team

Transformational Nursing Leader Award
Avni Cirpili, MSN, RN, NEA-BC
Chief Nursing Officer, VPH

"I felt very honored and also very humbled.  To be recognized as a transformational leader at VUMC, which has many highly regarded and transformational leaders in nursing, is a real honor.  Also, it was a great acknowledgment of the VPH nursing leadership team.  I feel that a leader is only as good as the team they lead and we at VPH (and VUMC) truly have a transformational leadership team."

Friend of Nursing Award
Dena Smith, Respiratory Therapist II
Respiratory Care

"I was in total shock, but later I felt very honored and will try to the best of my ability to live up to Friend of Nursing and make sure not to let the nurses down.  It is truly an honor to know that they feel that I should be nominated for this award and I would like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart.  They are truly friends and are one of the greatest teams to work with."
