I'm Christin Ayre, RN. I am the manager of the Neurology/Neurosurgery ICU located on the 6th floor of the Critical Care Tower of Vanderbilt University Hosptial.
To work in the Neurology/Neurosurgery ICU, our nurses are encouraged to have certifications in neurology and critical care. Nurses need to be able to assess patients with neurological diseases requiring critical care.

Our unit specializes in providing critical care to patients with brain tumors and diseases of the brain that require surgery. Our patients come from all over Tennessee and from around the Southeastern region of the United States to seek treatment. Unlike other ICUs that specialize in neurology, we are not a trauma unit.
Our patient focus is on monitoring the neurological status of our patients, detecting cues of neurological decline, intervening before the decline happens, returning patients to their optimal level of health, and maintaining their ideal neurological status.
A typical shift for our nurses includes assessing, treating, and monitoring two critically ill patients at their bedside as well as placing central lines, providing medications, and tending to pressure monitors and drains in the patient’s brain.
With 34 beds, we are proud to be one of the largest neuro ICUs in the country! We have quite a large referral base, with patients often selecting our ICU over others in the area to treat their specialized conditions. We have worked very hard to reach our goal of maintaining a low infection rate and are proud of our team for that accomplishment
