I’m Jerry Ballhagen, EMT. I am the Ground Transport Base Manager for the Neonatal Delivery Transport Team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.
To work on the Neonatal Delivery Transport team, our nurses need to be dedicated to serving the community and be open to mentoring and orienting new team members.

Our unit specializes in stabilizing and transporting critically ill infants to the hospital from around Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama. We focus on maintaining a good attitude and being an ambassador for VUMC when we’re out on a call, because we may be the only face from Vanderbilt they see.
A typical shift for our nurses includes responding to calls involving sick babies, checking equipment, starting IV’s, and working in an ambulance with a team consisting of a doctor and an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). On occasion there will also be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and sometimes a Respiratory Therapist if a baby needs support.
We are proud that we can care for the smallest and the sickest babies, stabilizing them and bringing them back to the hospital, and doing a fantastic job. We are frequently saving 23-week gestation babies that would not have survived 35 years ago.
The Neonatal Emergency Transport Team is currently licensed in both Tennessee and Kentucky and is CAMTS (Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems) accredited. CAMTS sets the national safety and patient care standards for all modes of transport and our Neonatal Emergency Transport Team is the first of its kind in the state to receive such a high honor.
