I’m Lori Graves, BSN, RN, CNOR. I am the manager of the Pediatric Operating Rooms located in Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
To care for our patient population, nurses in the Pediatric Operating Rooms ensure each child undergoing surgery receives the same excellent standard of care as recommended by the Association of Perioperative Nurses (AORN) regardless of the complexity of the surgical procedure.

Our unit specializes in surgical care in all specialty areas including burn care, cardiothoracic surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, Level One trauma, otolaryngology, pediatric general surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, renal and liver transplant, and urology. Our main focus is making sure every child gets the best possible care during surgery
A typical shift for our nurses includes working with a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, pediatric nurses and other specially trained pediatric health care professionals.
Our unit trains new nursing staff through an extensive Perioperative Internship Program that is offered twice per year. Interns gain experience in a wide variety of services during this orientation program.
We have several active subcommittees of the unit board that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of the care that patients receive as well as improving the work life of the staff.
