This group represents some of the many Vanderbilt Nurses who are certified in their areas of specialty.
According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Certified Nurses Day™ honors nurses who contribute to better patient outcomes through national board certification in their specialty. A nursing license allows nurses to practice. Certification affirms advanced knowledge, skill, and practice to meet the challenge of modern nursing.
Professional certification is a voluntary designation earned by individuals who demonstrate an exceptional level of competency, skill, and knowledge in their field. Certification is the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote optimal health outcomes. After meeting defined eligibility criteria, a certification candidate achieves a nationally recognized credential through successful completion of a rigorous examination.
Specific nursing roles have designated skill sets that are required for safe patient care, such as: basic life support. (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and others. While these skill sets are crucial to patient safety, professional certification goes above and beyond this to measure and acknowledge an exceptional level of competency in nursing specialties.
Professional certification is awarded by a national nursing body such as the Association of Critical Care Nurses, Oncology Nursing Society, Association of Perioperative Nurses, Emergency Nurses Association and many others. Certification is officially recognized by the ANCC.
At Vanderbilt, we appreciate the contributions our certified nurses make every day!
