Welcome to the

Department of Pathology at Vanderbilt

These are exciting times for Vanderbilt and for this department. I am incredibly enthusiastic about what is happening here. The energy and momentum are palpable. This coming academic year will see 12 new faculty members join us.  We are striving for a healthy mix of energetic and enthusiastic newcomers with more established longer-term members of the department all working together to make us better .

The Department of Pathology at Vanderbilt has a long and rich history of excellence in teaching, clinical service, and research. Our portion of the sophomore year is rightfully regarded as one of the jewels of the medical curriculum at Vanderbilt. Our residents have ample opportunities to develop their teaching skills in the medical school, the medical technology program, and the Belmont University physical therapy program. Opportunities abound for upper level students to participate in the diagnostic and investigative activities of this department. We have instituted a post-sophomore year fellowship in pathology for highly motivated medical students who wish to explore pathology in even greater depth. Our Ph.D. program in Cellular and Molecular Pathology is thriving.

Our residency (AP/CP, AP and CP) and fellowship programs (anatomic pathology, hematopathology, renal pathology, GI pathology, neuropathology, clinical chemistry, molecular genetic pathology, molecular medical genetics) have well-deserved national reputations for training superb diagnosticians who are in great demand for positions in both academia and private practice. Our investigators at the graduate student, research fellow, and faculty level are fully engaged in state-of-the-art research using all the tools of modern biological science to push forward the frontiers of pathobiology as they unravel the mysteries of normal biology and disease at the cellular and molecular levels.

Renovation of the space and facilities we occupy continues as we develop new offices and laboratories for our department. Many faculty members moved into newly renovated office, clinical laboratory, and research laboratory space during the past year. Renovation of the clinical laboratories at the Nashville/Middle Tennessee Veterans Administration Hospital on our campus is underway. Construction has begun on the third bed tower at Vanderbilt Hospital that will contain new and expanded space for surgical pathology and transfusion medicine.

The next few years will bring continued growth and expansion of our existing residency and fellowship training programs, the development of new ones, and the establishment of new graduate and medical student educational programs all with the intent of preparing our trainees to be leaders in pathology well into the 21st century. Similarly, our investigative programs, especially those in the areas of vascular biology and cancer biology, will undergo marked expansion. We are committed to taking a leadership role in both basic and translational research in these ``areas of focus.'' During this time of rapid growth we remain committed to the foundations of excellence upon which this department rests. Those of us here are privileged to count among our colleagues some of the leading figures in American Pathology.

We hope that from our web site you gain an appreciation for our department and programs and that you can attain a glimpse of the exciting future that we share. We welcome your inquiries and/or your application to join us.

Sincerely,

Samuel A. Santoro, M.D., Ph.D.
