Research Description

Our laboratory cultivates clinical and translational research themes linked to significant problems in infectious diseases and public health, with particular focus on pediatric illness. We seek results and insights that enlarge an understanding of infectious diseases etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prevention. Current projects in the laboratory include collaborative research into acute gastroenteritis (AGE) with colleagues in Infectious Diseases and respiratory virus-associated reactive airway disease with investigators in Pulmonary Medicine. The impact of pediatric diarrheal illness, especially that attributable to rotavirus and norovirus, is under study through prospective surveillance of gastroenteritis epidemiology. These efforts are aimed at defining rotavirus vaccine efficacy, patterns of rotavirus molecular evolution, and the changing etiologic spectrum of pediatric AGE in the post-rotavirus vaccine era. Mechanisms of asthmagenesis are under investigation in prospectively recruited newborns experiencing their earliest respiratory illnesses of life. This research is designed to define the pathogenesis of viral infections in pediatric asthma and allergy in relation to viral infection etiology (with specific emphasis on respiratory syncytial virus and rhinovirus), pathogen phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, clinical presentation, and host immunologic parameters. Other projects presently housed in the laboratory include characterization of Chlamydia pneumoniae-host cell interactions and role of human papilloma virus in the oncogenesis of certain chemotherapy-associated cutaneous neoplasms.
