VUMC Observational Experience

Welcome!


The Observational Experience program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) allows students and working professionals to learn about careers in health care.  To maintain the safety of our patients, their families and the person observing, there are requirements that each applicant must meet. 

All paper work must be submitted 10 business days prior to your

Observational Experience start date.

 Additionally:

  • This program is observational only.  There is no hands-on activity allowed.
  • Each applicant must find her/her own VUMC professional to observe  For more information, click here.
  • High school students must be at least 16 years of age.
  • All high school students and anyone under the age of 18 years old, are not permitted to observe in the Adult Operating Room.
  • No one under the age of 18 years old may observe physicians in the Adult Emergency Department ( ED).
  • Applicants can observe each VUMC professional for up to 120 hours per year. The exact amount of  hours may vary by department.

To begin your observational experience, choose from one of the following:

I am in High School

All Other Students & Working Professionals (including college students, graduate students, medical school student and individuals not in school)

I am a nursing student

I am a 4th year medical student

I am a physician
