Reference Range: Negative

Reasons for Rejection: Excessive delay in transport.

Significance: A positive antigen result has high specificity and does not require a culture to confirm. If susceptibility is needed, request a culture as well as an antigen. A negative antigen needs to be cultured to rule out Streptococcus group A.
Special Instructions: Negative antigen will be cultured for Streptococcus group A; this includes a separate charge. When a culture is performed, there will be separate charges for organism identification and susceptibility testing when appropriate.
