Methodology: Leukocyte concentration, indirect fluorescent antibody stain for pp65
Reference Range: Result: negative, positive, or indeterminate. CMV positive cells: zero, or number seen
Tube Type: Purple top (EDTA)
Specimen: Whole blood
Alternate Specimen: Dark green top (Lithium Heparin) accepted but not preferred because positive cell count may be decreased.
Pediatric Requirements: Lavender top (EDTA) 2 mL or lavender top microtainer (1 mL) x 2 if WBC is > 7.
Volume: Draw 5 mL if WBC is greater than 2, draw 10 mL if WBC is less than 2
Minimum Volume: Adult: 3 mL if WBC >7; Peds: 1 mL if WBC >7
Temperature: Room temperature 20-25 C
Stability: Samples older than 24 hours will receive a comment.
Reasons for Rejection: Clotted, hemolysis
Days Performed: Monday - Saturday
Times Performed: Processed and stained Monday - Friday; processed Saturday, stained on Monday.
TAT: 1-2 days
Special Instructions: Send to lab immediately at room temperature. This assay requires it's own separate tube.
