HSV 1&2 ANTIGEN - VESICULAR SPECIMENS (HSG)

Methodology: Direct fluorescent antigen
Reference Range: Negative, positive, invalid
Tube Type: UTM tube, sterile container with saline
Specimen: Cellular material in a small amount of universal (viral) transport medium (UTM) or sterile saline - specify source. No wooden shaft or calcium alginate tip swabs;no disinfectant. NOT PERFORMED ON CSF. COLLECT EXTRA SWAB IF CULTURE IS NEEDED.
Alternate Specimen: Will accept material in syringe for DFA only but requires Virolog Medical Director consult.
Volume: 1 - 3 mL UTM or sterile saline
Minimum Volume: 1 mL UTM or sterile saline
Temperature: Store refrigerated (2-8 C), do not freeze, transport on wet ice
Stability: Store refrigerated (2-8 C); samples older than 24 hours will receive comment.
Reasons for Rejection: Calcium alginate/wooden/dry swab; Slide prep not preferred but accepted
Days Performed: Daily
Times Performed: Monday - Friday: 6:30 am to 11:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
TAT: 1-3 hours
Special Instructions: Send to laboratory immediately on ice. No wooden shaft, calcium alginate or dry swabs.
