CMV CULTURE (CMC)

Methodology: Centrifuge-enhanced (shell vial) culture
Reference Range: No virus isolated
Tube Type: Liquids in sterile leak proof container with NO ADDITIVE, tissue or swab in universal (viral) transport media, 3 mL
Specimen: Material from any site except blood-specify source. NOT PERFORMED ON CSF without prior pathologist approval (PCR is most sensitive assay for detection of CMV in CSF). DO NOT PLACE URINE or any body fluid in transport media.
Pediatric Requirements: 1 - 2 mL urine
Volume: 10 - 15 mL urine
Minimum Volume: 1 - 2 mL urine
Temperature: Store refrigerated (2-8 C), do not freeze, transport on wet ice
Stability: Labile specimen. Keep refrigerated.
Reasons for Rejection: Collected more than 1 day prior to receipt in lab, urine in container with additive, calcium alginate or wooden-shaft swab, dry swab, leakage
Days Performed: Daily
Times Performed: Monday - Friday: 6:30 am to 11:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
TAT: 24 - 48 hours
Special Instructions: Send to the lab immediately on ice. Place in universal (viral) transport medium UNLESS liquid specimen (Urine, etc.). No wooden or calcium alginate swabs. Additional tests/charges may be added as appropriate.
