COMPREHENSIVE VIRAL CULTURE & RSV ANTIGEN DETECTION (VSR)

Reference Range: Culture - no virus isolated, RSV antigen - negative
Tube Type: Wash, aspirate, lavage in sterile leakproof container; flocked swab preferred but dacron/rayon swab accepted in universal transport medium,3ml or 1-2 ml saline
Specimen: Material from respiratory source only; Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab/aspirate/wash or nasal wash preferred
Temperature: Store refrigerated (2-8° C), do not freeze, transport on wet ice
Stability: Labile specimen. Keep refrigerated.
Reasons for Rejection: Collected more than 1 day prior to receipt in lab, non-respiratory source, calcium alginate or wooden-shaft swab, dry swab
Days Performed: Monday - Saturday. RSV antigen performed 24/7
Times Performed: Monday - Friday: 6:30 am to 11:00 pm, Saturday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
TAT: Culture: 1-10 days, antigen: 0.5 - 1 hour
Special Instructions: Send to lab immediately on ice. Add viral transport medium to respiratory trap. No wooden shaft or calcium alginate tip swabs. Additional tests/charges may be added as appropriate.Respiratory DFA available upon consultation with virology laboratory.
