Reference Range: Culture - no virus isolated, Flu antigens - negative
Tube Type: Wash, aspirate, lavage in sterile leakproof container; flocked swab preferred but dacron/rayon swab accepted in universal transport medium,3ml or 1-2 ml saline
Specimen: Material from respiratory source only; Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab/aspirate/wash or nasal wash preferred
Temperature: Store refrigerated (2-8° C), do not freeze, transport on wet ice
Stability: Labile specimen. Keep refrigerated.
Reasons for Rejection: Collected more than 1 day prior to receipt in lab, non-respiratory source, calcium alginate or wooden-shaft swab, dry swab
Days Performed: Monday - Saturday. Flu antigen performed 24/7
Times Performed: Flu antigen performed ASAP
TAT: Flu antigen: 30 minutes -1 hour, culture: 1-10 days
Special Instructions: Send to the lab immediately on ice. Put in viral transport medium. No wooden shaft or calcium alginate tip swabs. Additional tests/charges may be added as appropriate.
