: Culture - no virus isolated
: Wash, aspirate, lavage in sterile leakproof container; flocked swab preferred but dacron/rayon swab accepted in universal transport medium,3ml or 1-2 ml saline
: Material from respiratory source only; Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab/aspirate/wash or nasal wash preferred
: Store refrigerated (2-8° C), do not freeze, transport on wet ice
: Labile specimen. Keep refrigerated.
Reasons for Rejection
: Collected more than 1 day prior to receipt in lab, non-respiratory source, calcium alginate or wooden-shaft swab, dry swab
: RSV antige
: 1-10 days
: Send to lab immediately on ice. Add universal (viral) transport medium (UTM) to respiratory trap - put swab in UTM. No wooden shaft or calcium alginate tip swabs. Additional tests/charges may be added as appropriate.
