Tube Type: Wash, aspirate, lavage in sterile leakproof container; flocked swab preferred but dacron/rayon swab accepted in universal transport medium,3ml or 1-2 ml saline
Specimen: Material from respiratory source only; Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab/aspirate/wash or nasal wash preferred
Temperature: Store refrigerated (2-8° C), do not freeze, transport on wet ice
Stability: Labile specimen. Keep refrigerated.
Reasons for Rejection: Leakage, collected more than one day prior to receipt in virology lab, Non-respiratory source, calcium alginate or wooden-shaft swab, dry swab
Days Performed: Monday - Saturday. Flu and RSV antigen performed 24/7
Times Performed: Monday-Friday: 6:30 a.m. -11 p.m.; Saturday: 7 a.m. -3:30 p.m.
TAT: Culture 1-10 days, antigen 30 minutes - 1 hour
Special Instructions: Send to lab immediately on ice. Add universal transport medium to respiratory trap. No wooden or calcium alginate tip swabs.Additional tests/charges may be added as appropriate. Respiratory DFA available upon consultation with virology laboratory.
