CSF CYTOLOGY (NGY)

Department: Cytology
Test Synonym(s): Cerebral Spinal Fluid, Brain Cyst Fluid, CNS Body Fluid
CPT Codes: 88108
Methodology: Call Lab for assistance at 615-322-2721.
Tube Type: Any clean specimen container and/or the Plastic LP tube. (Second or third tube collected is preferable for cytology)
Specimen: Fresh specimen - deliver to the lab immediately
Volume: 3cc to 10 cc is optimal
Minimum Volume: 3cc
Temperature: Refrigeration is optimal
Reasons for Rejection: Mislabeled specimen, insufficient fluid for processing
Days Performed: Monday - Friday; closed major Holidays
Times Performed: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
TAT: 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) for routine cases.


Significance: Need patient history of prior or suspected malignancy; i.e., carcinoma, melanoma, lymphoma, etc.

Special Instructions: We must be informed if patient had prior or has suspected Lymphoma or Leukemia. Specimens on patients with this history are directed to another laboratory for different tests and results (Hematology and Hemepathology). For patients with a history of or suspected carcinoma (or malignancy other than Heme) should be directed to Cytopathology.
