CSF CYTOLOGY (CYC)
: CYC, Brain Cyst Fluid, CNS Body Fluid, Cerebral Spinal Fluid
: Call Lab for assistance at 615-322-2721.
: Sterile container; Clean specimen container and/or the Plastic LP tube (Third or fourth tube collected is preferable. No glass containers will be accepted.)
: CSF: Fresh specimen - deliver to the lab immediately
: Obtain as much as clinical judgement allows
: Refrigeration is optimal
Reasons for Rejection
: Mislabeled specimen,specimen received in a glass container, received in syringes with needles attached, specimen leaked out in transit, insufficient fluid for processing
: Monday - Friday; closed major Holidays
: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
: 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) for routine cases without cell block or special stains may require a longer turn-around time
: Need patient history of prior or suspected malignancy; i.e., carcinoma, melanoma, lymphoma, etc.
: Lab must be informed if patient had prior or has suspected carcinoma (or malignancy other than Heme). For patients with a history of or suspected Leukemia or Lymphoma, it is recommended that CSF Hematology (test code HSF) be ordered and sent to Hematology.
