CULTURE WOUND BACTERIAL (WOB)

Test Components: Bacterial culture, Gram stain
CPT Codes: 87070: aerobic culture, 87075: anaerobic culture (If requested and specimen is in anaerobic transport). 87205: gram stain
Methodology: Culture and gram stain
Tube Type: Culturette swab
Specimen: Wound, specify source
Temperature: Room temperature
Stability: Send to lab immediately
Reasons for Rejection: Non sterile or leaking container, excessive delay in transport.
Days Performed: Daily
TAT: Gram stain: 3 hours after arrival in Microbiology Lab Culture: 2-5 days
Special Instructions: Gram stain included with culture and has a separate charge. There will be separate charges for organism identification and susceptibility testing when appropriate. Specimens sent from OR will be cultured for aerobes and anaerobes. Other specimens with a high suspicion of anaerobic bacteria should have a note made on the lab requisition and specimen should be sent in anaerobic transport media.
