Site Description

The Special Collections Digital Library provides access to information and resources about the history and people of VUMC, to the services and holdings of Eskind Biomedical Library Special Collections, and to a wide range of online resources—many of them full-text—about the history of medicine, surgery, healthcare, and related topics. These resources include online exhibits; information about archival collections at VUMC and elsewhere; classic texts and images from the history of medicine; and historical, ethnographic, and sociological databases. The Digital Library is browsable by subject and is keyword searchable.

Navigating and Searching the Digital Library

  • Browsing Left-Hand Navigation
    • About Special Collections - Provides general information about EBL Special Collections, our services, and our people.
    • Resources by Collection - Provides access to EBL's unique historical and archival collections on the history of VUMC and the history of medicine, as well as access to selected collections of related resources from around the world. Many of the Digital Library's resources (including all of its archival finding aids) are accessible through these collections.
    • Resources by Subject - Provides subject access to all of the Digital Library's resources and collections. Subjects are further broken down by resource type.
    • Online Exhibits - Provides access to EBL's online exhibits featuring our unique resources about the history of medicine and VUMC.
    • Library Catalog - Link to ACORN, the Vanderbilt University online library catalog. ACORN provides author, title, and subject access to EBL's collection of rare books.
    • Eskind Main Digital - Link to EBL's Main Digital Library.
    • Customized Digital Libraries - Link to our Customized Digital Libraries, which are designed to meet the needs of targeted users both within and outside the Vanderbilt Community.
  • Legend
    • Available to all Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical Center faculty, staff and students symbol Restricted to Vanderbilt faculty, staff, or students - access is only available to current Vanderbilt faculty students or staff, or through Vanderbilt University workstations
    • No symbol - No access restrictions; resources can be accessed by anyone from anywhere (freely available)
    • Additional information about this resource symbol Click on blue i for more information about a resource, including edition, publication date, subjects, technical information and description
    • Non-Vanderbilt Resources The globe symbol indicates that the resource or collection is not located at Vanderbilt University or hosted by Vanderbilt web servers
    • Help symbol This help symbol links to the Digital Library Help page
  • Keyword Search - Searches for keywords appearing anywhere in the title, alternative title, or description of the resource.
    • Check the box labeled Search Complete Archival Descriptions to search the complete finding aids for our manuscript collections, archival collections, and biographical files. This option is best used for searching names and other uncommon terms, as common search terms (such as "VUMC") will return too many results. This option also allows searching by phrase, with phrases surrounded by quotation marks.
    • Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol. This will allow you to search for all terms beginning with a certain "root." For example, a search on "medi*" will retrieve entries containing the word "medicine" or "medical" or "medicinal."
    • Omit punctuation (hyphens, apostrophes) and special characters
    • To execute a phrase search, merely type in the phrase (do not use quotations)
    • Enter search term and click on Go!
  • Advanced Search - Allows users to combine keywords, subjects and formats to search the Digital Library. Within the Keywords field, input keywords to search for then refine your search further by restricting to the title field or selecting search limits from the Subject and/or Data Format pulldown menus. You may select multiple subjects or formats. After highlighting the first menu choice, choose the next selection by holding down the control key and clicking the mouse at the same time. Use one or all three search options (keyword, subject and format).

Off-Campus Access

If you are accessing the Digital Library from an off-campus computer, you must enter your VUnetID and password to access certain restricted resources that are limited to Vanderbilt use. See the article "Remote Access to the Eskind Digital Library!" for more detailed information.
