Surgical Skills Lab

A SURGICAL SKILLS COURSE session will be offered during orientation on the first day of each clerkship, in 419/423 LH. This course will give third year medical students a foundation in basic surgical techniques which should be in the repertoire of any physician.

Course Syllabus - Goals and Objectives

  • Instrumentation Overview: Students will learn the general types of instruments and what they are used for, as well as their care. Students will be allowed to examine and manipulate a variety of forceps, clamps, needle holders, scissors and other instruments.
  • Instrument Tying: Students will learn the situations in which instrument tying is most commonly used, and be able to demonstrate the elements of instrument tying.
  • Two-handed Knot Tying: Students will learn the situations in which the two-handed knot tie is most commonly used; and be able to demonstrate the elements of the two parts of a two-handed tie.
  • Basic Suturing: Students will learn the situations in which simple interrupted and running sutures are most appropriate, and the concepts fundamental to accurate and atraumatic suture placement. Students will demonstrate on models (pigs feet) the placement of simple running and interrupted sutures. Time permitting, students will learn the situations in which subcuticular, buried and vertical mass sutures are most appropriate.
