So You Want
to be a Surgeon?

If you are considering a surgical career, we are here to foster your interest. Feel free to approach any faculty member or resident to ask about our careers and our lives (we have lives, really!). Be sure to vocalize your interest before/during/after your clerkship. Be aggressive and get involved. Work hard on the wards (on all your rotations). Ask questions in the operating room and clinics.

Helpful resources:

You can schedule an appointment with Dr. Lomis by contacting Susan at 3-9486.

Surgical Interest Group
Make sure you are on the list! This group organizes events with residents and faculty to provide you skills and advice. Contact Rebecca Snyder Class of 2008.

The American College of Surgeons site provides information on what it takes to have a successful and satisfying career as a surgeon and how to proceed through the match process.

For the female students in the group, the Association of Women Surgeons is a valuable resource. Students can join for a nominal fee of $10/year (if that is a hardship for anyone, contact Dr. Lomis). Supportive chat rooms and guides to perform at your best are some of the benefits to members.
