The Harwell Wilson Award for
Surgical Excellence
Dr. Harwell Wilson, born in Lincoln, Alabama on May 23,
1908, recieved his B.A. and M.D. from Vanderbilt. He worked
with Dr. Alfred Blalock on shock Therapy. At the begining of
World War II he volunteered for service in the 300th General
Hospital Unit, the Vanderbilt Unit. In 1948 he became
Professor of Surgery and the Chairman of Surgery at the
University of Tennessee College of Medicine, a position he
held for 26 years. In appreciation for Vanderbilts
contribution to his education Dr. Wilson instituted the
Wilson Award to encourage excellence in surgery by
recognizing the resident judged out-standing in dedication
to patient care, research, and teaching.
