The Leonard W. Edwards Lecture

Dr. Leonard W. EdwardsA 1912 graduate af Vanderbilt Medical School, Dr. Leonard W. Edwards chose a surgical career. He became the first clinical surgeon engaged in private practice with full professional rank in the Deepartment of Surgery at Vanderbilt. A true general Surgeon, Dr. Edwards’ main interest was gastrointestinal surgery. He posesed keen and expert judgement and was a master technician. He enjoyed operating upon patients with complications, and doctors and their families compromised a sizeable portion of his practice. His grasp of a surgical problem was phenomenal, and he was indeed far ahead of his time in his surgical thinking and his exploits. He inspired both students and residents, and his surgical rounds were awaited with enthusiasm.

In January, 1947, Dr. Edwards performed the first truncal vagotomy and antral resection for duodenal ulcer. Dr. Edwards’ contributions to the surgical literature on duodenal ulcer operations popularized the operation of vagotomy and antrectomy for duodenal ulcer.

After Dr. Edwards’ death in 1969, his family and friends established the L.W. Edwards Lectureship.
