Dr. Ayad’s clinical interests include all aspects of neurological surgery, with emphasis on cerebrovascular and endovascular surgery, cerebral angiography, trigeminal neuralgia, cerebral ischemia, and traumatic brain injury. He also holds a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at Vanderbilt.

Education:

1978-1981 B.S., with distinction, Stanford University, Stanford, CA
1983-1985 Graduate Program, Cardiac Physiology, University of California, San Francisco, CA
1988-1994 Ph.D., Neurophysiology, University of California, Los Angeles, CA (UCLA)
1994-1998 M.D., Alpha Omega Alpha, UCLA School of Medicine

Postgraduate Training:

1998-1999 Internship, General Surgery, The George Washington University Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

2005-2007 Endovascular and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery Fellowship, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN

Current Research Interests:

Dr. Ayad’s clinical research interests include the treatment and outcome of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), intracranial aneurysms, revascularization for high surgical risk patients with carotid stenosis, cerebral neuroprotection, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. His doctoral thesis at UCLA focused on electrocortical and cerebrovascular physiology in ischemia. From this work stemmed his development of a brain retraction sensor for intraoperative monitoring of cortical electrical activity and surface pressure during skull base surgery, for which he holds two U.S. patents.

During his residency at The George Washington University Medical Center, Dr. Ayad received the Singer Award for Excellence for Clinical Research in 2003. He also received both the Crutchfield-Thompson-Gage Clinical (2002) and Basic Science (2003) Awards from the Neurosurgical Society of the Virginias.
