The Vanderbilt Department of Neurological Surgery provides excellent comprehensive care for pediatric and adult patients with disease or injury involving the brain, the neurovascular system, the spine, and the peripheral nervous system.

We have a long tradition among the surgical specialties represented at Vanderbilt Medical Center. In an effort to keep pace with our patients' needs and to advance our own educational and research goals, we add new faculty. Between 2002-2005 we added 6 new clinical faculty members (Oran Aaronson, M.D., Joseph Cheng, M.D., Robert A. Mericle, M.D., Matthew Pearson, M.D., Reid Thompson, M.D., Kyle D. Weaver, M.D., ) and a new research faculty member (Moneeb Ehtesham, M.D.)

We continue to grow, adding 5 more clinical and research faculty members:

Clinical Faculty
Michael J. Ayad, M.D., Ph.D. (July 2007)

the University of California, Los Angeles and completed the UCLA Medical School AOA. He completed his Internship and Residency in Neurological Surgery at the George Washington University Medical Center. Prior to joining the Vanderbilt faculty he completed an Endovascular and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery Fellowship from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Joseph S. Neimat, M.D., M.S. (July 2006)
Dr. Joseph Neimat is Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He completed a Master’s Degree in Neurobiology at Duke University. He then completed his Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a Fellowship in Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto with Dr. Andres M. Lozano.

Research Faculty
Michael S. Remple, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery. His clinical interest is microelectrode brain mapping for target localization of deep brain stimulation treatment of movement disorders. His research focus is on electrophysiology in cortical and subcortical stimulation, primate sensori-motor physiology, and neural prosthesis development.

Charles Manning, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Manning is Assistant Professor of Radiological Sciences and Neurological Surgery. He is also a member of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science. His research focus is on creating, developing, and testing chemical compounds that possess the ideal properties for endovascular brain mapping.
