Vanderbilt University offers a combined program which provides oral and maxillofacial surgical training, the M.D. degree and one year of general surgical residency. The duration of this program is six years. Vanderbilt also offers a non-M.D. track program. the duration of the program is four years. The Vanderbilt program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Dental Education. The Vanderbilt program takes great pride in not only offering excellent surgical training but also a superb medical education from Vanderbilt
University School of Medicine, one of the top medical
schools in the country.
Successful completion of the residency satisfies the
educational requirements for certification by the American
Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, one or
more years of research training and advanced clinical
training are available by special arrangement. The research
may also be part of a Masters or Ph.D. program.
The combined program provides residency training and a
formal medical education in less time than would be required
if each component were taken as an individual program. This
is made possible by proper sequencing to provide dual credit
whenever appropriate. Basic medical and surgical training is
completed before the final years of oral and maxillofacial
residency. During its 33-year history, the Vanderbilt program has evolved into a well-established and coordinated means of training. The Outline
of OMS Residency provides details of the six-year and four-year training sequences.
