Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery RESIDENCY TRAINING FOCUS Program Overview | Training Focus | Staff & Clinical Facilities | Application Clinical Consistent with optimal patient care, the oral and maxillofacial surgical residency provides the trainee with increasing responsibility for patient management. Residents in oral and maxillofacial surgery acquire training in the following clinical areas: all facets of hard and soft tissue facial trauma acquired and developmental deformities of the facial skeleton cosmetic facial surgery obstructive sleep apnea dentoalveolar surgery secondary alveolar cleft repair temporomandibular joint disease __ functional and esthetic bone graft reconstruction of jaw and facial skeletal defects micro-neural nerve repair osseointegrated implants management of head and neck infections neoplasms and cysts of the oral and maxillofacial region Research Resident participation in clinical research projects, leading to publication, is strongly encouraged and fully supported by the program.   Core Curriculum Through medical school and weekly OMS Department conferences/seminars, the requirements for a core education in oral and maxillofacial surgery are satisfied at Vanderbilt. The department is thoroughly committed to supplementing a superb medical education with departmental conferences/seminars presented by residents, our faculty, guests, Vanderbilt University faculty, and visiting faculty of national and international reputation.
