As an Assistant Professor in the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery, I participate in a broad range of clinical activities, which reflects my interests. The majority of my practice involves the care of patients who need emergency surgical care, which includes blunt and penetrating trauma, burn/skin and soft tissue disorders, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. I also see outpatients in our Surgical Care Center and schedule elective operations which cover a broad spectrum of general surgery. One particular clinical interest of mine is the application of minimally invasive/laparoscopic surgical techniques in the acute and outpatient setting. This encompasses patients with biliary tract disease, appendicitis, small bowel obstruction, abdominal wall hernia, and abdominal pain of unclear etiology to name a few. My research interests are primarily clinical in nature. I have a broad range of interests which include trauma systems, transfusion and resuscitation of severe hemorrhagic shock, damage control trauma and general surgery, ultrasound utilization in the settings of trauma and surgical critical care, insulin therapy and glucose control in the intensive care unit, the application of information technology to the practice of medicine and surgery, and the evolving practice of Acute Care Surgery. Involvement in the education of medical students and residents was a major factor in my decision to pursue a career in academic surgery. My teaching is clinical in the areas of trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. I currently direct the Acute Care Surgery teaching conference for residents and students which we hold on a weekly basis. I currently am a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma (EAST). I am active within EAST as a member of the practice management guidelines committee, and I have participated in authoring and developing several guidelines for the management of trauma and emergency general surgery patients. I was recently a finalist in the Resident Paper Competition of the EAST Foundation for my work with massive transfusion protocol delivery. I am an Ultrasound Instructor certified by the American College of Surgeons, and an instructor for the "Ultrasound in the ICU" course. I am also fluent in Spanish which has served me very well throughout my residency, fellowship, and career.
