Photographic portrait of John Ward Patterson. John Ward Patterson received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University and his M.D. from Western Reserve University in 1949. He was appointed vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University during the 1950s. In 1962, Patterson resigned from those posts to return to research and teaching as professor of physiology, a position he served for one year.
