Photographic portrait of John Lawton Shapiro. John Shapiro, M.D., graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1938 and from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1941. He received a Combat Infantry Medical Badge in 1944 for service in Italy during World War II. After the war, Shapiro conducted a residency at Vanderbilt (1948-1949), and then joined the faculty in 1950. Upon the retirement of Dr. Ernest W. Goodpasture in 1956, Shapiro was named Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology. Honored with the title of Professor Emeritus, Shapiro passed away in 1983.
