A native of the Netherlands, John Buddingh received his medical degree at Vanderbilt University in 1935, serving as an assistant and associate in pathology. He became an instructor in bacteriology in the School of Medicine in 1937, pathology in 1938, and rose to Professor of Bacteriology over the next eight years.
