Vertical Divider LineThe Challenge

In 2001 the Institute of Medicine publishes “Crossing the Quality Chasm” as one of our nations calls to action for health care.

As defined, the health care system lacks a comprehensive set of capabilities to address the complex challenges that cut across traditional organizational bouandaries.

One essential capability is a neutral place where stakeholders from across the US can collaboratively understand and resolve our challenges as a system.

Vertical Divider LineOur Response

The Vanderbilt Center for Better Health (VCBH) launched in 2002 as a response to the IOM’s call to action.

The core question: Which next improvement will substantially increase health, safety, quality and outcomes, while decreasing total cost?

The VCBH provides advisory services, conducts sponsored research, and formulates new approaches to our client’s challenges using fact-based methods to address this question.

Vertical Divider LineOur Evolution

Since our inception, the VCBH has contributed to the national dialog by supporting: the Memphis community in creating their operational health information exchange; the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in developing prototype Personal Health Records; multiple Academic Health Centers and Health Systems in developing their strategic plans; and numerous clinical leaders in developing their new approaches for safety and quality.
