Sedentary Diabetic

Roman Bisson is a 51 year old male. He currently does not have a partner and has an administrative job where he spends 40 hours a week sitting at a desk. Food is always available in the office kitchen. Roman is overweight; he has gained 4-5 pounds/year over the past 5 years. He was warned three years ago that his blood glucose was high and he had borderline diabetes.
Four months ago he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Currently Roman is not on any medication. He said: “I want to avoid medication and try to help myself with diet and exercise.” Roman tests his blood glucose daily (fasting). He does not test after meals. Recently Roman decided it was time to get active and take some control of his health. He started walking 3 times per week and is using a new tool to help change his behaviors.
He is looking into joining a gym or investing in some home exercise equipment. Roman eats 2 meals per day but snacks often on crackers, fruits, juices, nuts, popcorn etc. Roman is very comfortable with the “normal” PC User experience.

Speaker: We took a different approach. We were trying to be brief.

Speaker: And our group was--we are Team E and its Karen, Lisa, Will and Rich and Rob later joined us. And our charge was to look at Roman who is a 51 year old male. He currently is alone, he doesn't have a partner, and he's got an administrator job where he spends 40 hours a week sitting at a desk.
Food is always around. Because of this he is overweight. He has gained about 45 lbs. each year over the past five years. He was warned that if he keeps that up, he's going to develop diabetes. And so, lo and behold, because he didn't have a place to go to help him figure out how to manage this, he was diagnosed with type II diabetes. |

Currently he is not on any medication. And he wants to avoid medication and try to help himself through diet and exercise. He tests his blood glucose daily and he is a fasting blood glucose. He doesn't test after meals. He recently decide he needed to get active and take control of his health. And so he started walking three times a week and he is using the new tool to help change his behavior.
Little did you guys know that this is the newest member of the AHCA consumer website work group. And he is going to help us design this. So he also is looking at in joining a gym, looking at some home exercise equipment. He eats about two meals a day, but other than that he snacks on crackers, fruits, juices, nuts, popcorn - the stuff that we all snack on. And he is a PC user, normal PC user. |

And so what we did is we looked at this and we thought, "This is the guy, that we could really probably help him manage his care ".And so as we pair this down, we thought what he needs. He has already made that decision. He is going to try avoid medication and so he is going to look at self -management of care.
So he needs education on the condition, how to manage it, how to measure a piece managing it correctly, what his different treatment options are. And what are the benefits and the risks are of each of those treatment options. |
| 02:50 |
And then not only does he need the education when he's ready, he needs resources. And those resources are tools and maybe it is an online exercise plan. Maybe it is an online sample diet. Maybe it is an online evaluation of the local health clubs and their pricing information and web services they offer are home gems and maybe a discount to that.
He needs information on the providers, in terms of which provider should he go to for help on managing diabetes without medication. And what are some quality and ultimately the outcome measure? And the outcome measure is it doesn't get so bad that he loses his eyesight or his foot. And that he would also need support groups because he is alone. And so he needs somebody to help him to bounce ideas off of or to get some guidance with. |
| 03:49 |
So he needs support groups. And then also he didn't say that he's got insurance but since we're all going to moving to,--everybody in the state of Florida will be having insurance. He needs to have access to which health plans do the best jobs with managing diabetes. So those are the types of tools.
Now, who should provide all of these? Well the vision for the majority of our group, that there should be one source that Roman goes to. And by the way he's going help us design this. And it would really be a public - that the state of Florida. And then some of the tools, they would either link out to some of the other websites, some of the information they got themselves or some of the information they need to build. But our vision is one website for Roman to go to, to help him stay healthy.
