The Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience
was launched in the Fall of 1998. The program was designed
to provide a mechanism for undergraduate students to gain
a depth of knowledge in neuroscience as an area of concentration
and to serve as preparation for entry into graduate programs
in neuroscience or the biological sciences or for entry
into medical school. The program takes full advantage
of the resources available at Vanderbilt in neuroscience
and related areas, utilizing courses and faculty from
several schools and departments and is one of the most
popular majors in the College of Arts and Science.
Through the course of study in the Neuroscience Program,
students become well-grounded in the natural sciences,
obtain significant laboratory experience, and are exposed
to both fundamental and specialty courses in the neurosciences.
Students get to take advanced courses in subjects related
to the study of neuroscience such as molecular biology,
cell biology, and physiology. A centerpiece of the Neuroscience
program is the opportunity for research experience in
the laboratories of Vanderbilt neuroscience faculty. Approximately
35 faculty from the College of Arts and Science, School
of Medicine, School of Engineering, and Peabody College
participate in this program that provides students the
opportunity to do original research on topics ranging
from the molecular biology of olfaction in mosquitoes
to visual perception in humans.
