Evidence-Based Services - Patient Informatics Consult Service

The Patient Informatics Consult Service (PICS) is a free information service provided by Knowledge Management information specialists to all current Vanderbilt patients and the people who care about them.

  • This service combines the library's Patient Education Collection with the expertise of the PICS information specialists to retrieve accurate, relevant, and appropriate information for Vanderbilt patients in easily-understandable information packets tailored to the individual's needs about their specific medical condition, disease, or genetic results.
  • PICS information packets usually contain a summary of the condition, a bibliography of appropriate articles, and summaries with full-text of the most relevant articles.
  • Patients seeking knowledge about genetic test results will receive an information packet explaining their results as they relate to a specific medical condition or prescription drug.
  • A copy of each personalized packet is also sent to the patient's clinician to create a complete communication loop that best enables patients and families to obtain and understand information relevant to their health care.
  • Patients are encouraged to discuss the information found within the packets with their physician or healthcare professional.
  • The goal of this program is to empower patients to be active participants in their healthcare.

To receive a comprehensive information packet, the patient's physician must fill out a "Prescription for Information" form. This form is also available in the library or can be downloaded and printed. If you are having trouble downloading or printing the "Prescription for Information" form, please contact the library at 615-936-1410 or direct your physician to this webpage.

After receiving a completed information summary, please complete this feedback form so we can continue to improve our patient services.

Current VUMC patients and their family members are welcome to visit the Eskind Biomedical Library to browse for health information on their own or to receive on-the-spot assistance from an information specialist. The Patient Education Collection consists of a consumer health book and video collection for in-library use, and a collection of online consumer health information resources. A number of freely available online patient health resources have also been selected and reviewed by our team, and can be accessed via the Digital Library through an advanced search for consumer health resources (tip: scroll down in the Subject field to select "Consumer Health").
