MRB IV Evacuated After Early Morning Incident; No Injuries

Police evacuated Medical Research Building IV building early Thursday after reports of a small fire on the eighth floor of the facility.

The event wasn't a fire but was instead a Freon gas leak from a compressor in room 8424 of the building. The incident began about 6:40 a.m. The building was reopened about 8:30 a.m., said Lt. Randy McClain of the Vanderbilt Police Department.

Three Vanderbilt employees were taken to the adult Emergency Department of Vanderbilt University Hospital as a precaution before the chemical was identified as Freon. They were uninjured.

There was no contamination or air quality issues on campus because of the incident, a representative of the Fire Department said.

Thursday is Senior Day at Vanderbilt, with many graduates, parents and other visitors on campus for activities leading up to Commencement on Friday, May 13. There were morning traffic delays because of the incident.
