Celebrate Food Day tomorrow

Food Day 2014 will take place Friday, Oct. 24. A nationwide event, this will be the second year it has been observed at Vanderbilt University. Activities will take place across both the University and Medical Center campuses, affording many ways for faculty, staff and students to get involved.

Food Day offers the opportunity to focus on and learn about healthy, affordable and sustainable foods. Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Campus Dining will have Chef’s Tables set up in the Courtyard Café, the food court in the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and at the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center (VRWC), from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Each table will be hosted by a chef from Vanderbilt Dining. They will be offering samples of different healthy items from the Medical Center’s Mindful Menu or from Campus Dining’s Smart Choice menu, depending on the location. They will also be available to answer questions about creating meals that are healthy, affordable and utilize sustainable foods.

Additionally, the dietetic interns will be traveling to 32 different departments and groups across both VUMC’s campus and satellite sites to give “Nutrition Minute Roadshows,” discussing nutrition education with recipes, tips and healthy samples. They will present 30 minute sessions to each selected group; however, attendance is not limited to those in the group.

The topic schedule is:
8 a.m.: Breakfast on the GO
10 a.m.: Those Sneaky Veggies
2 p.m.: Fill Up Your Cup
4 p.m.: Pack a P.M. Punch

In the VRWC, faculty, staff and students can stop by throughout the day for several different activities. Between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Smoothie King will be offering free smoothie samples. Executive Chef Kelly with Campus Dining will be providing samples from the Campus’ Smart Choice menu from 11a.m. until 1 p.m. and Marilyn Holmes, MS, RDN, LDN, will present a “Nutrition Minute” table with information on the prevalence of food insecurity in Davidson County and the surrounding areas.

Food Day 2014 is presented by the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center, Health Plus, the Dietetic Internship Program, Campus Dining, VUMC’s Courtyard Café, Children’s Hospital’s Food Court and Support Services Administration.
