Opioid prescribing law goes into effect July 1; VUMC to provide educational material, more

As part of TN Together, a statewide initiative to stem the crisis of opioid use disorders, Gov. Bill Haslam signed into law on May 21 the HB1831/SB2257Amendment 015082 which will go into effect July 1This law creates safeguards that guide healthcare providers toward best practices in opioid prescribing, with the ultimate aim of reducing chronic opioid use and diversion of unused medications.

As part of VUMC's commitment to the health of the communities we serve, the Medical Center fully supports this legislation. In the coming weeks, we will provide educational materials and systems support to facilitate adherence to these new guidelines. In the meantime, we have attached a graphic illustrating the guidelines and a table for morphine milligram equivalent conversions.
