Introducing Teladoc, a new Tier 1 service for VUMC Health Plan members
Employees who are VUMC Health Plan members and their adult dependents now have access to Teladoc, a virtual care service staffed by more than 3,000 licensed physicians who can diagnose and treat a wide range of non-emergent medical conditions, from rashes to upper respiratory infections. Teladoc physicians are U.S. board-certified and state-licensed with average 15 years of practice experience.
The Teladoc service is not meant to replace your primary care provider, who coordinates your care over time. Instead, it is a convenient and affordable option that allows you to talk to a physician who can diagnose, recommend treatment, and prescribe medication when appropriate for many of your non-emergent medical issues. It is important to let your primary care provider know if you have been prescribed a new treatment by a Teladoc physician.
On-demand appointments are available 24/7/365. You can also schedule an appointment for a specific date and time between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. CST. Appointments can be completed over the phone or by video.
You can get started with Teladoc even before you have a need for a visit. Simply download the Teladoc mobile app from the iTunes or Google Play store or visit www.teladoc.com/aetna on your computer. Create a Teladoc account using your Aetna member ID and complete a brief medical history. You must complete the medical history before requesting an appointment, however.
Teladoc visits are charged at the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network rate; copays are $20 for Aetna Plus and Aetna Select members. HealthFund employees pay the full cost of the visit, $40, if they have not met their deductible; otherwise they pay 10 percent coinsurance ($4). You will only be charged after the appointment is completed.

Can I get a prescription?
Teladoc does not guarantee prescriptions. It is up to the physician to recommend the best treatment. Teladoc’s physicians do not issue prescriptions for substances controlled by the DEA, non-therapeutic, and/or certain other drugs which may be harmful because of their potential for abuse. Also, non-therapeutic drugs such as Viagra and Cialis are not prescribed by Teladoc physicians.
Can I choose the pharmacy to which my prescription is sent?
Yes. If the physician prescribes medication, it is submitted electronically (SureScripts) or by phone to the pharmacy of your choice. SureScripts uses a geo search, so if you want to use the Vanderbilt Outpatient Pharmacy, you will need to put in VUMC’s zip code or address.
