Research Study on Emotions, Endorphins and Chronic Pain

Researchers at Vanderbilt University are looking for males and females between the ages of 18 and 55 who are experiencing low back pain to participate in a National Institutes of Health study.

The study consists of two sessions lasting approximately 3.5 hours each. This study is designed to better understand the natural mechanisms that the body uses to manage pain, and how these mechanisms may relate to emotions and emotional expression.

Study participation will include assessment of blood pressure, administration of a safe, commonly used drug that temporarily blocks your body’s natural painkillers, undergoing two brief laboratory pain tasks and may involve participation in a brief interview in which you will recall an anger-provoking incident.

Participation Criteria:

• Age 18 - 55.
• Experiencing chronic pain of at least three months duration.
• Are not taking narcotic pain medication on a regular basis.
• Do not suffer from hypertension.

Participants will be compensated for their time upon completion of the study.
