A Message from the Deputy Vice Chancellor about Provider Communication Wizard

Recently, Jim Jirjis, M.D., Chief Medical Information Officer, presented to the Clinical Enterprise Group on the Provider Communication Wizard, a new communication tool within StarPanel that allows our providers and clinical staff to easily send clinic notes, discharge summaries, operative notes and medicine lists to a patient's referring provider.

The purpose of this tool is to provide capabilities within StarPanel for providers or staff to:

• Select referring providers from a quality-assured, accurate database.
• Select documents to be sent, such as notes, discharge summaries and pathology results.
• Generate a cover letter.
• Click send — and the system will fax or mail the documents to those providers automatically.

This project was initiated in response to receiving a clear message from our referring providers that we are unreliable in our clinical communication of important notes, results and discharge summaries. This tool should make it far easier to communicate these documents reliably to our referring providers.

The Provider Communication Wizard is designed to allow either the provider or their appropriate staff to use this tool. Thus far, 90 percent of the use of this tool has been by providers.

We are currently in the implementation phase of this project, and our goal is to transition all provider communications to this tool.

I ask each of you to develop a plan within your area to:
• Work with Electronic Medical Records team or system support to schedule training for your providers and staff.
• Develop a plan and implement use of this tool in our outpatient clinics and on hospital discharges.

We ask that you develop a plan so that for each provider there is a system in place where either the provider or their staff uses this tool for every visit and every discharge.

We are going to work toward this potentially being a Service Pillar goal with threshold, target and reach goals established for each area.

Thank you for helping us improve the reliability of our communication with our referring providers.
