Bass’ research focuses on modeling judgment and decision making in order to inform the design of human-automation interaction and training systems.

She applies this research in the domains of air transportation, weather, bioinformatics and health care. She is an associate editor in chief of the journal IEEE Transactions of Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (Part A, Systems and Humans). She serves on the editorial board of Human Factors and the International Journal of Applied Aviation Studies. She is an officer of the Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making Technical group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 2002, Bass was a research engineer for Search Technology. Before that, she was a systems engineer for IBM and SAIC supporting air traffic control and military applications. She is a private pilot.
