This is a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study. We will enroll 38 (16 healthy controls, 16 POTS patients, 6 additional for dose escalation – 3 POTs, 3 controls)
This study will help us learn more about how a chemical called dopamine affects the excretion of sodium by the kidneys and if changes in the kidney dopamine content influence heart rate and blood pressure. One phase of the study involves taking 5 doses of carbidopa to change dopamine levels and the other phase involves taking 5 doses of a placebo
This is a study designed for patients that are known to us to have a low blood volume. We want to compare the autonomic and blood volume effects of a very low salt diet to a high salt diet. Sodium intake has been recommended for years as a treatment for POTS. Our work here is to determine if salt treatment makes a difference.
