Title of project: A Stressful Work Environment Causes Stress on the Trauma Team

Description of project: A descriptive survey using online surveys to describe the levels of stress experienced by different members of the trauma team, their coping skills and the different types of stressors they experience.

Why you chose this project: Trauma nurses care for some of the most critical patients in the hospital. It is a fast-paced, intense atmosphere and the staff must be able to provide lifesaving care to a diverse population of people. Trauma patients and their families arrive to the trauma unit on the worst day of their lives. They are in distress and often lack the ability to cope with the critical situations they must face. These stressors along with sleep deprivation and the psychological demands of caring for this unique population places nurses and other care givers at an increased risk for burnout, compassion fatigue and workplace violence. Support must be obtained to help mitigate the risk and provide the tools necessary to manage this complext work.
