Research Description



Research in this laboratory employs in vitro model systems to investigate the roles of interactions between leukocytes and the endothelial lining of blood vessels in acute inflammation and atherosclerosis. Current work is directed at the responses of endothelial cells to physical contact with leukocytes and the resulting effects on synthesis and secretion of growth factors, arachidonic acid metabolites, plasminogen activators, metalloproteinases, and other endothelial cell adhesion molecules.

Signal transduction pathways that are activated as a result of the cell-cell interactions are being examined to determine their contributions. Other aspects of the work concern the polarity of endothelial cells and the topography of endothelial cell function. We are also investigating differences in the biology of endothelial cells isolated from different blood vessel types, such as large vessel aortic endothelium versus small vessel capillary endothelium, in an attempt to correlate cell function with vessel structure.
