The mission of the Vanderbilt Center for Kidney Disease (VCKD) is to advance medical and biological research by providing the scientific community with standardized, high quality phenotyping services for models of kidney disease and to provide experimental platforms to test potential therapeutic interventions. By broadening the availability of sophisticated in vivo and in vitro phenotyping, we hope to help investigators identify and study new models and treatment options that will lead to an improved understanding and treatment of these complex diseases.

The VCKD provides kidney phenotyping resources for the Vanderbilt community and for interested researchers at other institutions worldwide. A range of complex examinations used to characterize kidney physiology and pathophysiology are available on a fee-for-service basis. Researchers from other institutions will be able to ship mice to Vanderbilt in order to perform these assays. In addition, a number of VCKD training programs will facilitate the dissemination of expertise to other institutions by providing training in the use and application of a number of these assays for interested researchers. Four specific biomedical research cores have been assembled to provide these services. These include:

  • The Physiology Core offers a range of physiological assays to evaluate renal function in mice
  • The Kidney Injury Core makes available a range of mouse models of kidney disease and will oversee testing of potential therapeutics.
  • The Histology and Morphometry Core provides specialized histologic and morphometric analyses, and has assembled an extensive library of fixed mouse kidney samples encompassing normal and pathologic states that can be used for immunohistochemical analysis.
  • In Vitro Culture Core will isolate nephron segments and culture specific cell types from genetic mouse models. These will be processed for preparation of protein and/or RNA for immunoblotting, RT-PCR or microarray analyses on request.
